Carotid Artery Duplex
Plaque is a buildup narrowing (stenosis), or blockage that may reduce blood flow to the brain and increase the risk of stroke. Pieces of plaque or blood clots may also break loose and travel to the brain, temporarily or permanently blocking blood flow.
A temporary interruption of blood flow can cause a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a “mini-stroke.” If the blockage persists and brain tissue is injured, an ischemic stroke can occur, potentially resulting in lasting neurological problems.
This enhances the importance of preventive medicine. Our skilled Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) can help identify plaque and measure the severity of carotid narrowing, using an ultrasound machine.
During the test, a technologist gently moves an ultrasound probe along both sides of your neck to obtain images and measure blood-flow velocities. No needles or radiation are used, and the examination typically requires little to no preparation. It’s pain-free.

- E – Eyes: Sudden vision loss, blurred vision, or double vision
- F – Face: Sudden facial drooping or numbness, especially on one side

S – Speech: Slurred speech, difficulty speaking, or trouble understanding others
- T – Time: Call 911 immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

Duplex Analysis
The scan captures real-time 2D grayscale anatomical images alongside Color Doppler and Spectral Doppler wave analysis to accurately calculate blood velocity and vessel narrowing.
