Arterial Duplex Ultrasound
This non-invasive test evaluates the arteries and blood flow in the arms or legs. It uses ultrasound imaging and Doppler technology to look inside the vessel to identify plaque buildup, narrowing (stenosis), blockage (occlusion), or other abnormalities that may restrict circulation.
In the lower extremities, reduced arterial blood flow is commonly associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and may cause leg pain or cramping with walking, cold feet, numbness, skin changes, or wounds that are slow to heal. Severe disease can lead to rest pain, non-healing ulcers, tissue loss, and potential limb-threatening ischemia.
In the upper extremities, arterial disease may result in arm or hand pain, weakness, numbness, coldness, discoloration, or differences in blood pressure between the arms.

Patients may be evaluated for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) when they have:
- Leg pain or cramping with walking (claudication)
- Foot or leg pain at rest, especially at night
- Non-healing wounds or ulcers of the toes, feet, or legs
- Coldness of one foot or leg compared with the other
- Weak or absent pulses in the lower extremities
- Skin discoloration or trophic changes, such as shiny skin or loss of leg hair
- Numbness or weakness in the legs or feet
- Gangrene or tissue loss
- Known atherosclerotic disease
- Follow-up after angioplasty, stent placement, or lower-extremity bypass graft
- Abnormal ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index) or other vascular screening results

Patient Preparation
The patient rests in a comfortable supine position. The limbs to be examined are exposed while keeping the patient warm to avoid cold-induced vasoconstriction.

Our Registered Vascular Technologist glides an ultrasound transducer along the primary arterial pathways (e.g., femoral, popliteal, tibial, or brachial arteries).
Velocity Analysis
Color Doppler and Spectral Doppler wave patterns are documented to measure blood flow velocities and identify turbulence caused by vessel narrowing.
Duration
Wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably shorts, and loose-fitting undergarments to allow easy access to the groin area during the examination.
